Tallow is the rendered down suet (also known as leaf fat) from cows! Not to be confused with lard, that's from pigs. Beef suet is the super nutrient, hard fat surrounding the cow's organs, specifically the kidneys. This should also not be confused with trim fat, that's the softer fat from other parts of the animal. Did you know, beef suet is one of nature’s highest sources of Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA)?
We believe in the concept of Nose-to-Tail, where every part of an animal is put to use after processing. In fact, tallow has been used throughout history by our ancestors in things like, cooking and baking, candle making, soap making, leather care, and you guessed it: skincare! Head over to our blog posts to learn more about the many benefits of rubbing beef fat on your skin!
First off, we source our beef suet from local, regenerative farms in both Ohio and Michigan. The cattle are 100% grassfed from start to finish and fed hay out on pasture during the winter season. No grains, hormones, or GMO's sneak their way into our products. Additionally, because we source raw suet and not already rendered tallow, we are able to precisely control the quality and purity of the finished tallow, as we render it down ourselves. We have spent an incredible amount of time perfecting our unique rendering process that we simply won't leave it in the hands of anyone but our own.
Our tallow-based skincare products are all natural and generally mild enough for sensitive skin. But of course, what works for some may not work for others. Therefore, if you have a history of sensitive skin; have reacted poorly or experienced irritation after using new products in the past; have rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, or other chronic skin conditions; or have known skin allergies, a patch test is recommended before adding any new skincare product to your routine (not just ours).
Tallow itself is very shelf stable. Additionally, the oils we use are of the highest quality. However, for obligatory purposes and because we do not use additives or preservatives, we recommend using our products within 6 months of purchase. On the other hand, we produce in small batches, ensuring maximum freshness and quality. To prolong the shelf life of your purchased product, use clean, dry hands when sticking your fingers into the jar (avoid introducing water).
You'll notice our products all come in amber glass jars, and while this does help preserve the contents, we still recommend storing in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight.
Note: amber glass containers not only protect the contents from UV light radiation, which can cause the breakdown of molecules and deterioration of the product, it's also inert, meaning it doesn't react chemically with the products it contains. Ultimately, amber glass is non-toxic, no toxic substances can leach into the product, so it was a no brainer for us to utilize this type of jar for our products. Plus, you can reuse the jar!
